A Christian Homeschooler’s Guide to Teaching Elementary Science with Biblical Principles

“But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee.” Job 12:7

Birds are all around us, and every feather, wing, beak and nest has something to teach us about the God who made them. The Ornithology Learning Packet is an 8-lesson unit study for grades 3–5. Children learn how God designed birds, why He designed them that way, and what that design reveals about His nature and character.

This isn’t just a study of facts. Every lesson starts with a biblical principle, and students look up and record what Scripture says about birds. They learn to think and reason from God’s truth as they draw, label, read, explore and write.

What Your Child Will Study

  • Lesson 1: Biblical Foundations. God’s nature and character are revealed through nature.
  • Lesson 2: Feathers. God clothes His creation.
  • Lesson 3: Wings. God equips each creature for the life He designed it to have.
  • Lesson 4: Beaks. God uses birds to carry out His purposes.
  • Lesson 5: Feet. God provides a way for every creature to find its food.
  • Lesson 6: Nests. God gives each creature the wisdom it needs to make a home.
  • Lesson 7: Eggs. God gives life and sustains it.
  • Lesson 8: John James Audubon. God gives us gifts that we can use for His glory.

A Simple, Repeatable Routine

Every lesson follows the same five steps, so parents always know what to do next:

  1. Overview: discuss the principle and look up the Bible verses
  2. Draw: study the diagram, then draw and label it
  3. Reading: read the illustrated Facts Sheet and Types handout aloud while your child draws
  4. Hands-On: a memorable activity such as the Beak Buffet, the Lift Test or an Egg Taste Test
  5. Writing: record characteristics, answer the Reason Questions, and define vocabulary words using Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

Plan on 30–45 minutes a day, 2–3 days a week. Each lesson takes about a week, but you’re free to go at your own pace.

Teaching Children to Think Biblically

The Reason Questions don’t just ask for facts. They guide your child to describe how God made each part of the bird, explain why He made it, reflect on what it reveals about God, share what they appreciate, and connect God’s Word with the lesson’s principle. The “What Science Teaches Us About God” page helps children discover God’s creativity, wisdom, beauty, power and care in what they study. A guiding Answer Key helps parents lead these conversations.
