The Pilgrim Story: A Providential View is a family learning course that explores the Pilgrims through primary-source readings, biblical principles, history, geography, government, and personal reflection.
Using excerpts from William Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation, students study the Pilgrims’ journey from England to Holland and ultimately to America while examining the courage, faith, perseverance, self-government, and providence woven throughout their story. The course is organized around four major units: Introduction to the Pilgrim Story, The Tale of Two Voyages, Peace with the Indians, and Individual Enterprise and the First Thanksgiving. Rather than simply memorizing dates and events, students work directly with historical texts and learn to analyze the ideas behind them. Lessons include readings from Bradford, Scripture connections, vocabulary and old-English study, sequence charts, T-charts, document analysis, comprehension questions, biblical reasoning, and opportunities to compare historical events with biblical principles. The included notebook pages and assignments help students organize what they learn as they examine topics such as religious liberty, the Mayflower voyage, the Mayflower Compact, the Pilgrims’ peace treaty with Native Americans, Christian self-government, individual enterprise, and Thanksgiving. The course also includes illustrated coloring and narration pages that make the study accessible for family learning across multiple ages. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to view history through the lens of God’s providence and to consider how biblical ideas influenced the Pilgrims’ decisions, character, government, and way of life. The final reflection brings the study back to Scripture by asking students to explore what it means personally and biblically to be a pilgrim.
